On March 14, 1960, three middle-aged society women from suburban Chicago set out for a brief getaway to Starved Rock State Park. What should have been a peaceful retreat became one of the most chilling crimes in Illinois history. Within just two hours of their arrival, all three women were brutally attacked and murdered. Their beaten bodies were discovered in a canyon two days later, a discovery that horrified the entire nation.
For eight long months, investigators failed to make progress—until they abruptly turned their attention to Chester Weger, a 21-year-old dishwasher at the lodge. What followed was a shocking miscarriage of justice. Weger was hounded and intimidated, then subjected to an overnight interrogation marked by threats, coercion, and physical and mental abuse. Exhausted and terrified, he gave a confession—one he quickly recanted.

The confession itself was riddled with inconsistencies and contradicted the evidence.
Yet prosecutors pushed forward. They misrepresented facts, ignored contradictions, and withheld the truth. Despite having no real evidence tying Weger to the crime, they secured a conviction based solely on that coerced confession. Weger was sentenced to life in prison and remained behind bars for nearly 60 years, finally gaining parole in 2020.
This book brings the long-buried truth to light. It presents new revelations—including the confession of Smokey Wrona, who led the Mafia-linked killers—and groundbreaking DNA evidence. The most astonishing piece of evidence came from the crime scene itself: as two of the women fought for their lives, they pulled hair from their attacker. DNA testing of those hairs in 2023 proved conclusively that the hair did not belong to Chester Weger.
In their final moments, these women unknowingly preserved the key to solving their own murders.
This is a story of two devastating injustices: the brutal murders of three innocent women, and the wrongful imprisonment of a man who had nothing to do with their deaths.
If you’re drawn to true crime, wrongful conviction cases, or real-life mysteries that redefine what we think we know, this book is essential reading.
